DIVISION I FIELD HOCKEY
Torrey Pines goalie feels winning vibe

Penalty-stroke save a positive prelude

Torrey Pines' Kendra Bills (16) embraces Chelsea Yogerst after the two socred goals in OT.
With 11:08 remaining in the first half of yesterday's Division I field hockey final between Torrey Pines and San Pasqual, Falcons goalkeeper Ashlee Schlesier could already see the outcome.

She had just stopped a penalty stroke – no easy feat – and had a revelation.

“We're going to win it. That was it right there. This game belongs to us,” Schlesier said.

She called it right as Torrey Pines went on to a 3-1 overtime win at Rancho Bernardo High, locking up the school's first San Diego Section field hockey title since 2002. Schlesier stopped seven shots and was perfect in OT.

Top-seeded Torrey Pines (22-4) jumped ahead in the first half when the Falcons finally cashed in a short-corner opportunity. After the team missed its first six attempts, Sheridan Edwards took the entry pass from Meghan O'Rourke, then dished it to Kendra Bills, who ripped the shot for a 1-0 lead.

Less than a minute later, Schlesier was penalized for covering the ball, drawing the penalty stroke. She turned away San Pasqual's Mallory Albini, preserving Torrey's one-goal halftime lead.

The No. 3 Eagles (18-4) eventually cracked Schlesier midway through the second half. The Falcons failed to clear the ball out of their zone, and an opportunistic Nadia Namdari got the steal and the goal, tying the score and setting up seven-on-seven OT.

“I'm very confident in overtime,” Torrey Pines coach Kari DiGiulio said. “With our speed and ball control, I was confident with the seven I put out there.”

With 4:41 left in overtime, the Falcons drew a short corner. O'Rourke started the play with the entry pass, then broke straight for the goal to pick up any rebounds. She put her stick on Edwards' shot, redirecting it into the goal.

“I tried to do everything I could to get in front of the net,” O'Rourke said. “I saw the ball and stuck my stick out hoping to make something happen.”

Less than a minute later, Chelsea Yogerst locked up the win, scoring off a pass from Bills.
