UNION-TRIBUNE

November 22, 2008

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Today at Balboa Park's Morley Field

  (3.1-mile course)

DIVISION I

8:30 a.m.: Otay Ranch's Jacob Roach is coming off a big Mesa League win and is the favorite.

DIVISION II

9 a.m.: San Pasqual's Kenneth Raedel finished second here a year ago, just a second ahead of Hoover's Dahir Mohamed. The two square off again.

DIVISION III

10:40 a.m.: Clairemont's Eamonn McCarey was second here in 2007 and has shown no signs of slowing down. The prohibitive favorite is University City's Mac Fleet, who was injured a year ago.

DIVISION V

11:45 a.m.: Only 51 runners competed in this division in 2007 and once again this is considered a wide-open division. Tri-City Christian's Carson Colpean is the defending champ.

DIVISION IV

12:50 p.m.: La Jolla Country Day's Alex Poyhonen leads Guajome Park Academy's Marco Ramirez and Ismael Armenta. The Torreys won the team race and all of their runners return.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

Today at Balboa Park's Morley Field

  (2.75-mile course)

DIVISION I

9:30 a.m.: Rancho Bernardo sophomore Molly Grabill, the defending champ, has been untouchable.

DIVISION II

10:05 a.m.: Elizabeth Apgar of Lincoln easily won here a year ago but will need to be sharp against improving Erin Menefee of Mt. Carmel.

DIVISION IV

11:10 a.m.: Elizabeth Schulze and Laura Wyatt finished side-by-side in the Coastal League final after going 1-2 in this race in 2007.

DIVISION III

12:15 p.m.: Sammy Silva from Our Lady of Peace and University City's Sheree Shea dueled in 2007, with Silva winning by two seconds. When they met again in the Western League final, Silva dominated.

DIVISION V

1:20 p.m.: This is the smallest of all of the divisions. Only 28 runners started and finished the race a year ago, led by Tri-City's Chelsey Servi. Servi returns but look for teammate Natalie Harper and Julian's Kalyn Kelly to push her.
