Carlsbad senior Tommy Friedrich prefers to ignore history, even though the Lancers are on the verge of making some against Vista in the San Diego Section Division I final.
With his focus on the present, Friedrich scored four goals to help second-seeded Carlsbad record a 13-6 semifinal victory over Granite Hills last night at La Jolla High's Coggan Pool. The win put the Lancers in line to set a second record with their sixth straight title.
“We try really hard to not think about the record,” said Friedrich, Carlsbad's only returning starter from last season. “Obviously, everyone is like, 'Can they do six in a row? Can they do six in a row?' We just say that we can win (the section title).”
Poised to challenge Carlsbad on Saturday at the same site is top-seeded Vista, which advanced by topping Fallbrook 11-8 to reach the final for the first time since 1977.
Wes Lacroix scored six goals to lead the Panthers, who are bidding for their first title since a four-year reign ended in 1976. Travis Duncan assisted on three of Lacroix's scores and added two of his own.
“I'm stoked (to be in the final),” Duncan said. “I've been waiting for this since my freshman year, and getting to play Carlsbad is awesome.”
Vista (22-9) and Carlsbad (24-7) split two regular-season meetings.
The Lancers dispatched third-seeded Granite Hills (22-7) in a rematch of last year's final by twice striking for five straight goals to build an 11-3 lead with 3:59 left in the third quarter. Junior Preston Rodman finished with three goals. Fellow junior Ron Robertson provided seven assists and a goal.
“We are ready, definitely,” Carlsbad coach J.B. Feaster said. “We played really well.”
Senior Riley Lekos led the Eagles with four goals.
Vista went scoreless in the second period before Lacroix converted twice off passes from Duncan in the final 31.9 seconds for a 5-3 halftime lead over the Warriors (21-11).
“Travis and I have played together a long time,” said Lacroix, who spearheads an all-senior lineup. “We're best buds, so we just have that connection.”
To open the fourth quarter, Duncan scored his second goal and Brandon Butler added his third to establish a 9-6 edge with 4:34 to go. Vista goalie Taylor McVey finished with nine saves.
“We just knew that we had to stay calm and play our game,” Lacroix said. “Eventually it would come.”
