SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL GIRLS GOLF
Three local players earn spots in today's state championship

TODAY'S LOCAL NEWS

November 18, 2008

RIVERSIDE – One hole was all that separated La Costa Canyon High's Danielle Frasier from first place at yesterday's Southern California Regional girls golf tournament. Ditto for Carlsbad's Rachel Morris.

Instead, Frasier made double-bogey on her final hole to finish third, and a birdie putt on Morris' last green lipped out from 7 feet, leaving her alone in second.

Both players move on, along with Rancho Bernardo's Madi Mendiola (tied for sixth), as the San Diego Section's only representatives in today's state championship at Red Hill Country Club in Rancho Cucamonga.

Irvine's Victoria Park was the regional winner with a 6-under-par 66.

“Southern California is good competition, and that just proves it,” said Frasier, whose 68 would have earned first place at any of the past three regionals. “You've got to shoot some low numbers to get to state. You just elevate your game.”

For Frasier, the double-bogey was the only blemish in an otherwise spotless round. The Mavericks' junior was 6-under and bogey-free before a pair of errant chip shots on the final hole cost her a chance at the title.

“I got a little unlucky I guess, but that's what happens,” she said. “That's how quickly it can go.”

Morris' birdie miss was one of the few putts that didn't fall for her in shooting a 67.

“Her short game was perfect today,” Carlsbad coach Don Hartley said. “She missed five greens all day, and she got up and down every time.”

Her final-hole par came after Morris had birdied four of the five previous holes.

“I knew I was playing well,” said Morris, who won this event in 2006 at the Southern California Golf Association Members' Club. “It was just about getting putts to fall. I hit a good putt (on the final hole). I thought it was in.”

Mendiola, a sophomore who grabbed the last state qualifier spot with a 72, credited the greens at the Canyon Crest Country Club for yesterday's low scores.

“At (the San Diego Section championship) my putting was so shaky,” Mendiola said, “but today, I felt like I could make anything I stepped up to.”

Give an assist to the pre-round breakfast burrito.

“At the beginning, I was really nervous,” she said, “but I had breakfast with (coach Tim Steigerwald), and he calmed me down.”

Los Altos (378) won the team competition. San Diego Section qualifiers Poway and Torrey Pines missed a trip to the state tournament. The Titans, state champs two years ago, shot a 406, one shot ahead of the Falcons.
