HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Service for Player planned at Lincoln

UNION-TRIBUNE

October 23, 2008

A memorial service for former Lincoln High football coach Vic Player will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at the school's new gymnasium.

Player, 64, died Oct. 15 in his native Texarkana, Texas, after battling colon cancer since July.

Player, whose teams won four San Diego Section titles, coached the Hornets for 17 seasons. He stands 18th on the all-time section victory list with 132 career wins.

Softball playoffs

A plan was discussed at this week's Board of Managers meeting that could result in a double-elimination format for the section softball playoffs. The proposal was recommended by the sport's advisory committee. If approved, it could be in place by spring 2009. Baseball already has double-elimination playoffs.

Sports extra

More high school coverage can be found on the sports page of the local news section that appears inside the U-T every Thursday. Look for these stories in the Our North County, Our East County, Our South County and Our San Diego sections:

Julian football player Dakota Savage covers a lot of ground.

Monte Vista linebacker Tracy Shields commands respect.

Bonita Vista boys water polo team builds tradition of success.

St. Augustine sophomore QB Evan Crower is a quick study.

Smooth sailing

The Point Loma High sailing team opened the season by winning the Sea Otter Regatta at Monterey Bay. Leading the way were senior Caleb Paine and juniors Reece Bernet, Kevin Laube, Claire Bagg and Eric Cibit.

Vaqueros honored

El Capitan will induct a group of athletic alumni into its Hall of Fame tonight at the Lakeside Rodeo Hall. Multisport standouts Brad and Mitch Burton – twins who graduated in 1985 – will be joined by Richard Eckert (1968), Stacie Terry (1994), Candy Barra-Jenkins (1977) and track and cross country coach Ron Vavra. Eckert was a stellar football lineman. Terry starred in basketball. Jenkins excelled in volleyball, track, field hockey and softball. Vavra guided El Capitan to its first two section titles (cross country 1962-63).

The next step

Cathedral Catholic's Victoria Lippert will continue her basketball career at Harvard. The 5-foot-11 forward was an all-state Division III selection a year ago after averaging 18.6 points and leading the Dons to a section title.

Other local athletes continu-

ing at the next level include:

BASKETBALL: Canyon Crest's Alisha Eckberg (San Jose State).

BASEBALL: Point Loma's Matt Arlington (SDSU); Mira Mesa's Justin Bellez (SDSU); San Marcos' Tim Berry (Oregon); La Costa Canyon's Garrett Hughes (Stanford); Santana's James Needy (USD); Poway's Bennett Parry (Cal State Northridge); Cathedral Catholic's Ryan Wilkins (SDSU).

SOCCER: Torrey Pines' Catherine Cabot (Georgetown); La Costa Canyon junior Allie Ariniello (UC Santa Barbara-2010).
