Aztecs basketball star Wade suspended, facing burglary charges

San Diego State senior forward Lorrenzo Wade has been suspended indefinitely from the basketball team while he faces a felony first-degree burglary charge stemming from an incident Sept. 21.

Wade, SDSU's leading scorer last season, pleaded not guilty Tuesday, the same day he was named to the preseason all-conference team in the Mountain West. He surrendered to authorities last week and spent a day in jail after police said Wade and another man, Brian Cepeda Ware, were involved in the attempted theft of a television from a woman's apartment near SDSU.

Wade, 22, is out on a $50,000 bond. His attorney, Richard Muir, said Ware took the television out of the apartment, not Wade.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and will withhold final judgment until all of the facts are gathered,” Aztecs coach Steve Fisher said in a statement.

If convicted, Wade faces a sentence ranging from probation to up to six years in jail.

Meanwhile, a bench warrant was issued last month for senior guard Richie Williams, who failed to attend a scheduled program related to his drunken driving conviction earlier this year.

The two incidents are the latest in a series of run-ins with the law and team rules involving the SDSU men's basketball team in recent years.

In 2006, Brett Hoerner, then 19, was cited for drunken driving. He was suspended by Fisher at the beginning of the 2006-07 season and left the team after that.

In August 2007, Fisher dismissed starter Jerome Habel for unspecified reasons. Habel had a battery case under review by the San Diego City Attorney's office for allegedly spitting on his ex-girlfriend – a case that since has been dismissed, according to court records. Habel also had been suspended for a violation of team rules at the beginning of the 2006-07 season.

The year before, Fisher suspended Kyle Spain for five games, also for an unspecified violation of team rules. Sources said it was for testing positive for marijuana. Spain was suspended again earlier this year. The reason for the second suspension, sources said, again was marijuana.
