Stomach virus strikes at least 75 USC students

ASSOCIATED PRESS

2:20 p.m. October 4, 2008

LOS ANGELES – At least 75 University of Southern California students are being treated for a contagious gastrointestinal virus centered around a cluster of dormitories at its downtown Los Angeles campus.

USC spokesman James Grant said Saturday that students have been arriving at the campus' clinic suffering from vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhea. The campus community was alerted early Saturday with a blast of e-mail and cell phone text messages.

Campus medical officials are not recommending a full-scale quarantine, but Grant says the school is urging students who are not feeling well to stay home to avoid infecting others.

He stressed that ill students should not attend Saturday evening's football game between the USC Trojans and Oregon.
