Fire guts shutter manufacturing business

7:15 p.m. October 5, 2008

BEAUMONT – A ferocious fire chewed through wood, paint, thinners and other flammable material Sunday and “pretty much destroyed” a 5,000-square-foot wood shutter manufacturing business in Beaumont, a CalFire captain said.

The stubborn fire was declared controlled at 4 p.m., more than 10 hours after it was first reported at 5:50 a.m. Sunday, according to CalFire-Riverside Capt. Fernando Herrera.

The fire gutted the Wholesale Shutter Co., 411 Olive Ave. in Beaumont, according to CalFire officials at the scene.

County hazardous materials and public health specialists were assigned to inspect flammable and potentially harmful liquids that had earlier helped fuel the fire, Herrera said.

One civilian at the scene was treated and hospitalized for chest pains, Herrera said, but it was not clear if the person had any connection to the business. No other injuries were reported.

Commanders said the fire was contained at 8 a.m., but remnants of the destructive blaze smoldered in stacks of wood at the shutter-making business most of the day, according to CalFire accounts.

“We have it contained to the building of origin,” Herrera said earlier today. “It's not going anywhere else.”

More than 40 firefighters were assigned to the blaze, according to CalFire.

The fire was reported at 5:50 a.m. at Olive Avenue and 4th Street, less than a half-mile south of the Interstate 10-Highway 60 merger in Beaumont, according to Herrera.

Winds were not a factor in the fire's behavior and firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other properties, Herrera said.

According to its Web site, Wholesale Shutter Co. of Beaumont has manufactured “fine wood shutters” for more than 20 years. The company's factory-direct shutters can be found in celebrity homes and at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, the Web site said.

It's products include wood shutters, mini blinds, vertical blinds, woven shades and bamboo shades as well as exterior louvered shutters that can be manufactured from “solid poly material or wood,” according to the Web site.

Calls to the company were not returned.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
