Children enjoying new playground equipment at Ridgewood Neighbothood Park

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

September 3, 2008

IT'S FIXED: Ridgewood Neighborhood Park in Rancho Peñasquitos finally has new playground equipment.

As Just Fix It wrote in June 2007, the city of San Diego had removed aging equipment in fall 2006 but did not replace it.

THE SITE: Ridgewood Neighborhood Park in Rancho Peñasquitos.
We were originally told that the equipment would be replaced by last December, then Memorial Day and then the end of August.

We visited the park on La Tortola and Paseo Montril on Sunday afternoon and were pleased to see children enjoying the swings and other playground equipment.

“My kids are so excited to play at the park again!” wrote Laurie Heistand, who had contacted us about the problem.

Two play areas were replaced at a cost of about $250,000.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Darren Greenhalgh, deputy director of the city's Architectural Engineering and Parks Division, who can be reached at (619) 533-6600 and dgreenhalgh@sandiego.gov.

UPDATE: A homeless encampment near the Spring Valley Swap Meet has been shut down.

But a huge amount of trash has yet to be cleared, and neighbors say some squatters have relocated to a nearby site.

As we wrote in early June, neighbors had complained to the Sheriff's Department for years about a large number of homeless people living in elaborate makeshift homes on private property between Quarry Road and Leigh Avenue.

Soon after we first wrote about the problem, deputies gave a verbal warning to the squatters but later decided that a written notice was needed.

On Aug. 20, sheriff's deputies gave trespassing notices to the squatters. They were told to leave by Aug. 28 or face arrest. When deputies returned, the squatters were gone.

Cleaning up the area is the responsibility of the property owners. The county's Code Enforcement Division said it is working with the owners to make sure that the area is cleared and the squatters do not return. There are also plans to remove tall arundo reeds.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Cmdr. Ed Prendergast, who can be reached at (858) 974-2295 or ed.prendergast@sdsheriff.org. Pam Elias, chief of the county's Code Enforcement Division, who can be reached at (858) 495-5020 or pam.elias@sdcounty.ca.gov.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.
