Trolley crossing fixed; deputies taking action on encampment

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

August 20, 2008

Today, we update two train and trolley crossings that Just Fix It has been tracking for months. And we have promising news about a Spring Valley homeless encampment we've also been following.

IT'S FIXED: The rough crossing over trolley tracks on North Avenue in Lemon Grove was repaired last week.

THE SITE: Bay Marina Drive near Marina Way in National City.
The Metropolitan Transit System and the city of Lemon Grove worked together on the repairs. We wrote about this bumpy ride in May. MTS needed to wait on the repairs until the start of its budget year in July.

WHO GOT IT DONE: Fred Byle, MTS' superintendent of wayside maintenance, who can be reached at (619) 595-4937 or fred.byle@sdmts.com. Patrick Lund, Lemon Grove's acting public works director, who can be reached at (619) 825-3811 and plund@ci.lemon-grove.ca.us.

STILL WAITING: Plans to repair the railroad crossing on Bay Marina Drive in National City are still not on track.

The city, Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway and the San Diego Unified Port District have agreed to share repair costs. But the city and BNSF disagree over who should be responsible for future repairs. Until that is resolved, work cannot start. We've been waiting since February.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Melvin Thomas, BNSF's manager of public projects, who can be reached at (909) 386-4472 or melvin.thomas@bnsf.com.

STILL WAITING: The Sheriff's Department said it will deliver trespassing notices this morning to squatters living in an encampment near the Spring Valley Swap Meet on Quarry Road.

As we wrote in early June, neighbors have complained to sheriff's deputies about the large encampment for years. Deputies in mid-June told the squatters they needed to move on, but plans to clear the camp were scrapped because officials decided they needed to issue a written warning.

The Sheriff's Department, other county departments and owners of the property where the camp is located are expected to return on Aug. 28 to clean up the area. We've been told that any squatters still there will be arrested and their property will be impounded.

WHO'S RESPONSIBLE: Cmdr. Ed Prendergast, who can be reached at (858) 974-2295 or ed.prendergast@sdsheriff.org.

NEED A PROBLEM SOLVED: Is there a problem government hasn't fixed despite your complaints? Just Fix It might be able to help.
